Guest Review by my BFF, Shannon!

Hi Dolls,
My best friend was kind enough to do a review on her favorite foundation. Happy Friday! :-).

Photobucket Shan at a Mustachio Bashio last year :-D.

Hi all! This is Shannon, Vanessa’s BFF who often takes advantage of her make-up skills. V asked me to do a guest review for her blog so I thought I’d give it a try.

I don’t like spending a lot of money on makeup. One, because 99% of the time I only use my go-to products so any extra items would go unused and two, I’d rather use it on happy hour or new clothes. But when you run out of a basic product, you HAVE to replace it. That’s how I came upon Almay’s Smart Shade Foundation.

I ran out of my previous foundation and the CVS I shop at didn’t have my shade. So, after spending about 10 minutes trying to find a shade that worked (for a price I was willing to pay), I saw the Smart Shade. It was about $10 but it was coupled with a Smart Shade Blush (which alone sells for an additional $10). I was skeptical about how ‘smart’ the foundation actually was but I bought it anyway figuring it would probably match my skin color better than the $6-$8 foundations I had to choose from (and the back of my hand was covered in about 20 different shades already).

I used the Smart Shade Balancing in Light Medium. It starts out beige-y/white on your finger and darkens as you blend. (It’s really weird to see and I still haven’t figured out how it works exactly.) The foundation has a thin consistency, giving it a light finish. It evens your skin tone and covers small blemishes/shadows pretty well. There’s also really no scent to it, so that’s nice. The balancing formula works pretty well on my oily skin. My skin still gets oily, but I’m usually the only one to notice because I can feel it. The foundation prevents my face from looking slick/sweaty/shiny from the oil.

The blush that was paired with the foundation (in shade 020) worked the same way – starts out pink and blends into your skin/foundation. The blush is thicker than the foundation but doesn’t feel much heavier. The application of this is kind of a science – too much and your entire cheek is pink, too little and it blends completely in and becomes hardly noticeable. But I like natural-looking makeup for my everyday use and this is just the right amount of pink/color without looking too dramatic.

I’ve used the foundation just about every day for the past 3 months and am just starting to get to a point where I need to replace it – so I figure $10 for 3 months worth of product is a good deal. (I bought a replacement foundation – Almay Pure Blends – and it was paired with a mascara. Score!)

I would recommend the Almay Smart Shade line to anyone who hates trying to find the right shade of foundation and who doesn’t want to break the bank.

Happy Thursday!

Oh my goodness, I am SO ready for tomorrow! I’m meeting my best friends for sushi after work tonight and then doing a little bit of window shopping :-).

My God Sister Liz told me about her cousin Francine’s hand made jewelry and I ordered a couple of earrings, and I am in love! I’ve gotten so many complements on the hoops below and I’m planning an outfit/makeup around the blue jewels for this weekend.

Not only is the jewelry beautiful, but it’s unique and I know that I’m the only one that has them :-). Check out Francine’s Etsy site here .

Happy Wednesday Dolls!

Hope you’re having a great week, just stopping by to post a quick picture of the new nail polish I picked up yesterday. I was at Target when I spotted some fab red earrings on sale (yay!), and I needed a great polish to match. The Sally’s near my house had Orly polish for $5.99 and I found a perfect match for my new hoops.

What polish do you have on today?

Amazing Shampoo for $2? Yes, Please!

Photobucket A shot of Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena. Love that city!

Hi Babes!

What are you up to today? How’s the start of your week coming along? I’m counting down to my birthday and loving the hot weather in Southern California :-).

I was shopping around Target with my best friend about a month ago when I spotted Suave’s Clarifying shampoo for about $1.89; I popped open the cap and loved the clean smell so I gave it a try. The shampoo is a clear blue and the scent reminds me of clean laundry, it lathers up really well and leaves my hair clean and shiny. With one shampoo, I get clean hair; with two shampoos, I have squeaky clean hair. When I bought the shampoo, I was a little worried that my scalp would dry out, but after a month of daily use, my hair actually looks and feels healthier than before.

The description on the bottle reads: Bring out the natural beauty of your hair with this pH-balanced deep-cleansing shampoo that helps remove residue without stripping moisture.

Overall, a GREAT drugstore buy. I use this shampoo every day with Dove’s Daily Moisture shampoo and my hair is in really good condition; it looks shiny and doesn’t feel heavy at all.

Rating: 5/5.

What’s your favorite drugstore shampoo?

I’ve spent almost all weekend with my best friend! On Friday she made dinner and we watched Aladdin, Saturday we went to the Ontario Improv to see Sebastian Maniscalco (he was HILARIOUS!), and today, I went to a Lia Sophia jewelry party at her place. Awesome bonding weekend :-).

I’m back!….and Reviewing!

Photobucket My awesome friend Katie and I at a Lady Gaga Party :-).

I’m so so very sorry for being away for so long for those few of you that read my blog! I had an odd couple of months and I didn’t have time for anything…and being so busy left me tired and uninspired, but I feel a million times better and I’m ready to do this again!

I picked up Revlon’s Colorstay liquid foundation for $1.99 on clearance at my grocery store (random, right?) only because it was $1.99, LOL. They had one bottle left in my color, 150 Buff, so I brought it home and gave it a shot.

Photobucket

The last few weeks have been insanely hot here in Southern California, and my makeup is usually gone halfway through the day. I tried this on Saturday and loved the creamy texture; the perfume smell was a little strong, so caution to those with sensitive noses :-). After dusting my Mineralize Skinfinish powder over it, my skin looked flawless and like porcelain. This foundation held up through shopping all day and then a walk outside in 104 degree weather. I wore the foundation for two days without a problem and I was so excited ($1.99!!)….and then Monday came around and smashed my dreams.

If you’ve read my review on MakeUp Forever’s Matt Velvet+, you know that most foundations and my skin hate each other with a passion; Colorstay was in love with my skin for two days and then the honeymoon was over. I checked my skin at the end of Monday night and saw about 20 tiny little bumps on my cheeks…another foundation/skin relationship gone wrong.

I’m going to keep the foundation and use it for special occasions, because it seems to photograph really well, but it wont be my go-to like the MUFE foundation.

Rating: 3/5.

Have you had any bad experiences with foundation?

My Everyday Eyes

Photobucket

Hi Dolls!

I know, it’s been forever, right? School and work have beat me up so bad, I’m going to collapse and hibernate for a week after finals. My makeup has been beyond boring the last few weeks because I wake up with only enough energy to put some liner on so I don’t scare people lol. Averaging 5-6 hours of sleep a night has given me some not cute under eye bags, I had no idea how to hide them, and I had to rediscover an eyeshadow that had been put away for a while!

Photobucket

Stila’s Kitten shadow blended into the inner corners of your eyes can brighten them up so much! It distracts from any puffy bags and makes you look awake and alert.  This has been my every day look since the end of March:-).

Revlon Colorstay liner winged out, Covergirl Lashblast, and Kitten eyeshadow blended into the inner corners of the eyes.

How have you all been? What’s your favorite trick to brighten up tired eyes?

Friday Survey!

Happiest of Friday’s Babes!

I hope you’re all doing great and that your weeks haven’t tired you out too much. I can’t believe how much homework and projects have consumed my time, it’s kind of insane! I haven’t had time to play with makeup and I’m feeling withdrawals! I am going to play with some colors/looks this weekend and not delete them off my usb (like I did last week. I almost cried.). On to the fun stuff, I’ve missed your comments and am so sorry for my absence.

  1. How are you feeling today? Exhausted, but so very happy that my weekend is here. It’s full of homework, but I can do it in my pajamas!
  1. What are you looking forward to? School being out for summer, the next 5 weeks can’t move fast enough. I’m going to go blog crazy in May lol
  1. Are you getting enough sleep? No. Not at all. I have huge bags under my eyes to prove it :-(. Thank goodness for makeup!
  1. List 5 things you’re thankful for this week: my friends, my bf, coffee, sunshine, and hoodies.
  1. Fashion or makeup fauxpas that drives you nuts: HATE sheer leggings/pants that are work WAY too small and without proper underoos. I also can’t believe that there are still girls rocking sharpie eyebrows. I don’t get it.
  1. Favorite music right now? Anything acoustic by Marie Digby and Incubus…Secondhand Serenade is up there too.
  1. Food you’re craving: Pizza and Mangoes. Odd, I know.
  1. What scent are you wearing? Fantasy by Britney Spears, it’s my go-to and always get complements on it.
  1. Any beauty products you’re dying to try? The new L’Oreal primer, but I’m scared that my skin will declare war on me if I try it.
  1. What are your plans for the weekend? One on one time with my bff, we need one of our talks tonight. After that, we’re heading to the local pub/bar to play pool and hang out. Saturday will be full of homework, and a wedding. Sunday I will sleep until 8 lol, continue with homework, and spend some time with the bf.

Now fill it out and fill me in!

Sally Hansen Mega Shine Extended Wear Topcoat and an Earthquake

Hi Lovelies!
I missed blogging so much!! Sometimes working full-time and going to school take over my life and I only get enough downtime to sleep lol.
We just had an earthquake here about 15 minutes ago; I was sitting on my boyfriend’s bed, working on a paper when everything started to shake and I looked up…he was looking at me and he says, “Yep, it’s an earthquake!” and we sat through it for what felt like forever…everything was rolling and moving around. I actually yelled out, “Ah!!! It’s still going!!!!”. Now it’s passed and we’re watching the news; the epicenter of the quake was in Baja California, I hope all of those people are okay!

On to the subject of the post! I have no patience when it comes to nail polish drying time, I’m the one that has smudges on my nails after manicures because I can’t sit still long enough for the polish to dry. On one of my many trips to Ulta last year, I picked up Sally Hansen’s Mega Shine Topcoat on a whim and have fallen in love with it! After two-three coats of polish, I apply this topcoat and my nails are dry within 5 minutes. Not only does it dry fast, it keeps my manicure very shiny and relatively chip free for 5-7 days. Most topcoats get gloopy and weird after a month or so of use for me, but this one works and stays at a good consistency for 3-4 months (I use it 2-3 times a week usually). At $7, this is a steal and a definite must have in my book.

What’s your favorite topcoat?
